What is RPL?

Recognition Learning (RPL) is an assessment pathway that utilizes a person’s prior skills, knowledge, and experience gained through work experience, life experience, training courses, and work-based training to assess against the evidence requirements of one or more units of competency.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) RPL is issued under the Standards for Registered Training Organization (RTOs) 2015, based on the assessment of an individual’s previous learnings that is equivalent to the learning outcomes of Australian Qualifications.

RPL is all about the skills and knowledge that a person acquired through his work and life experiences. And then transferring them to current training course requirements. It uses an assessment of his previous course to decide whether it can be credited to his new course.

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process can help these individuals acquire a formal qualification that matches their knowledge and skills, and thereby contribute to improving their employability, mobility, lifelong learning, social inclusion and self-esteem. It’s an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

RPL assessment involves firstly examining carefully each of the authentic elements of qualification, including both the core units and elective units. This is a process of breaking down each element to understand the depth and scope of what must be pointed out by an applicant’s skills and knowledge.

For Example:

An electrician has learned electrical work by himself or hereditary from his father. We can provide him RPL once he submits all necessary documents. This is to convert his experiences into a nationally recognised certificate that he can use to step-up in his career.

What happens after the evidence is gathered?

Once you have submitted your evidence that was agreed upon during your interview, your assessor reviews it against the units of competency and makes an assessment decision based on your evidence being:

  • Valid: Our assessor must be assured that you have the skills, knowledge and attributes described in unit of competency and associated assessment requirements.
  • Sufficient: Our assessor must be assured that the quality, quantity and relevance of your evidence enables a judgement to be made of your competency.
  • Authentic: Our assessor must be assured that the presented evidence is your own work.
  • Current: Our assessor must be assured that the assessment evidence demonstrates current competency. This requires the assessment evidence to be from the present or the very recent past, i.e. within the past 2-3 years.
